Baxter County Hosted the Here, There and Everywhere Exhibit

The Donald W. Reynolds Library serving Baxter County hosted the Here, There and Everywhere Exhibit from March 1st- March 31st.

Opening Day of Here There and Everywhere

Number of patrons to visit: 700

The HTE exhibit came to life with demonstrations of shadows, wind, electric discharge, bow waves, lensing, and the collisional excitation of atoms. These demonstrations were assisted by the Library Volunteer Corps. Community partners helped to tout the special exhibit with their hands-on information booths. These Included the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Ozark Rock & Mineral Club, and Arkansas State University.

HTE - Build Your Own Seismograph.

Number of patrons to participate: 20

A multi-generational workshop was conducted to understand seismic activity, and that we can measure our very own quakes, using homebuilt equipment and free computer software. This workshop gave an introduction to local earthquake history and the science behind earthquakes and their study. For those who wanted to experiment with earthquake detection, the workshop demonstrated two types of DIY seismographs and how to analyze the output data. There was no charge for the class.

Solar System Geocaching – THE

Number of patrons to participate: 30

Educator Lynn Kelsh taught patrons how they could find all the planets in our Community Orrery with their GPS, starting with the Sun on Library grounds on how to use GPS, including the "extra planet" at the end with the geocache to "Take One-Leave One."

HTE - Dr. Jennifer Wiseman, Director of Hubble Space Telescope

Program Scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope at NASA Headquarters to speak. Dr. Jennifer Wiseman grew up on a farm in the Ozark mountains of Arkansas, where she learned to appreciate the night sky and the natural world. She received a PhD in astronomy from Harvard University, followed by research in star formation as a Jansky Fellow at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and as a Hubble Fellow at the Johns Hopkins University. She later served as the Program Scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope at NASA Headquarters, and then for several years headed the Laboratory for Exoplanets and Stellar Astrophysics at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, where she is now the Senior Project Scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope.
